Le cimetière date de 1824, ce qui fait de lui un des plus anciens cimetières de Paris.
Si c'est aujourd'hui un espace vert calme et reposant (19 hectares) et un véritable avre de paix, ca n'a pas toujours été le cas.
Le site a en effet subit de nombreuses profanations, comme l'histoire de 1849 où des corps de femmes furent retrouvés hors de leur tombe, mutilés. L'affaire fut vite élucidée en découvrant le coupable : un sergent nécrophile.
Un certain nombre de personnalités sont enterrés dans ce cimetière qui a su avec le temps gagner en popularité (peut être grâce à son emplacement idéal), dont Charles Baudelaire, Simone de Beauvoir, Jean-Paul Sartre et Serge Gainsbourg.
