Immerse yourself in the Parisian places that were once home to Agnès Varda: her courtyard studio on rue Daguerre, the sets for 'Cléo de 5 à 7' and her poetic tomb. In fact, discover how the capital nurtured her visual and intimate sensibility in her photos and films.

Agnès Varda has woven a personal urban cartography across Paris: her rue Daguerre transformed into a studio-laboratory, the Montparnasse district brought to life by a woman in search of answers, and a final resting place in Montparnasse turned into a place of artistic contemplation. For Varda, the City of Light is not just a setting: it is the material and body of her free, feminist creation.

To follow in Agnès Varda's footsteps is to discover a Paris in the form of an open-air museum, where every image could well become a scene from a film. Especially since the artist shared her life for many years with another great figure of French cinema, filmmaker Jacques Demy. Together, they embodied a seminal couple of the 7th Art, sealing their partnership in their home studio, a veritable creative laboratory, and in the film production company Ciné-Tamaris.

Agnès Varda (1928-2019), a photographer turned pioneering New Wave director, invented the concept of cinécriture, blending image, word and visual poetry. Her cinema, from La Pointe Courte to Plages d'Agnès, celebrated personal memory and the invisible, with a fresh, committed and tender eye.

  • In the footsteps of Agnès Varda in Paris

86 rue Daguerre (14ᵉ arr.). From 1951 until her last days, Agnès Varda lived in this courtyard-workshop-turned-photo studio and creative laboratory, where she unveiled her first photo exhibition in 1954. It was here that her archives, images and cinema were born and blended, and it was here that she shared her life with Jacques Demy, who moved in shortly after they met in 1959. It became a veritable artistic hotbed, with Agnès taking photographs and Jacques working on his screenplays.

Compagnie Ciné-Tamaris (14ᵉ arr.). Founded by Agnès in 1954 at 86 de la rue, Ciné-Tamaris became their joint production company, producing such films as Les Parapluies de Cherbourg and Les Demoiselles de Rochefort.

The Montparnasse district (14ᵉ arr.). In 1961, she used the streets of Montparnasse as backdrops for her film Cléo de 5 à 7, filming Paris as the inner reflection of a woman awaiting a serious medical verdict.

Place Jacques Demy (14ᵉ arr.). Named in 2000 as a tribute to her husband, this square underscores the historic presence of Agnès Varda and Jacques Demy in the Petit-Montrouge neighborhood.

Montparnasse cemetery (14ᵉ arr.). Agnès Varda is laid to rest, alongside Jacques Demy, in the cemetery's 9ᵉ division, whose grave is itself a work of art, with its colorful, kiss-covered tomb, bench and tree planted in a visual nod to the film Les Glaneurs et la glaneuse.
