France is proud of its heritage, and never misses an opportunity to show it off. That's why so many sites have been awarded titles such as "Monument Historique","Jardin Remarquable", "Musée de France"... In 2011, the French Ministry of Culture created a new label,"Maison des Illustres".
This label is awarded to places that preserve and transmit the memory and work of people who have distinguished themselves in the history of the arts, literature, science, politics... The label includes museums, workshops, châteaux and homes that have played host to these important figures and their work. Important to note: the sites awarded this label must be open to the public for more than 40 days a year, and offer a cultural program adapted to all visitors, the aim being to bring this heritage to life for the general public.
In Paris and the Île-de-France region, there are almost 40 sites that have been awarded the Maisons des Illustres label. These sites are often open to visitors, and allow us to rediscover the great men and women who have left their mark on the region, as well as on French history. They include Marie Curie, Emile Zola, Eugène Delacroix, Auguste Comte, Louis Pasteur, Rosa Bonheur, Victor Hugo, Louis Braille, Léon Blum...
To take advantage of the region's heritage, admire preserved historic sites and discover the region's great personalities, take a tour of the Maisons des Illustres de Paris et d'Île-de-France!
