Every day, millions of travelers pass through the Parisian stations without always grasping their historic significance. Yet these vast buildings have profoundly reshaped the face of the capital! Before the arrival of the railway in the 19th century, travel was often more of an expedition: journeys were long, expensive, and sometimes uncomfortable. The advent of the train then overturned that reality.

Gare du Nord flaunts a monumental façade adorned with statues representing major European cities, Gare de Lyon is topped by its famous clock tower and the sumptuous restaurant Le Train Bleu, while at Saint-Lazare, the vast glass roofs inspire Claude Monet, making it one of the emblematic subjects of Impressionism.
But Parisian train stations have also been the stage for major historical events. Gare de l'Est thus sent hundreds of thousands of soldiers to the front during the First World War, while Montparnasse entered legend with the incredible locomotive accident of 1895.
