In the 15th arrondissement of Paris, the city guards a well-kept secret: the Jardin Atlantique. Unlike gardens at street level, this green space is perched high above the city. Yes, a garden on the roof of Gare Montparnasse, just above busy train lines and bustling roads. Below, traffic roars, honks, and rushes by. Up here, there's breathing space. The noise stays on the ground, while greenery takes over.
Opened in 1994, this hanging green rectangle is supported by twelve arch piles. Beneath the lawns, 130 vents ensure proper airflow for the station and parking garage below. In areas where the soil was too shallow (just 20 cm), polystyrene was used as a support, while the 1.80-meter-thick layers provide the necessary depth for tree roots to grow. What once was a technical marvel has now become a charming, bucolic retreat.

The landscape shifts between different atmospheres. To the north and west, sharp geometric shapes and open vistas evoke classic French formal gardens; to the east, the more varied terrain and lush greenery recall English landscape parks. The plane trees from the Orient and the locust trees from Provence stand alongside American linden trees and Virginia's own micocouliers, creating a botanical dialogue that spans the Atlantic from one bank to the other. The central lawn, bordered by two rows of trees native to the countries bordering both sides of the ocean, defines the space. Pines provide a welcoming backdrop year-round, while perennial plants in white, purple, and blue tones echo marine hues. The gentle undulations of the ground evoke the movement of waves.
At the center of the garden stands the "Hesperides Island" fountain, a tribute to the sky. It features an array of instruments—thermometer, rain gauge, weather vane, and an anemometer measuring wind speed. The large mirror reflects the sun’s rays, illuminating the Mirroring Pool, which is often cast in shadow.
For leisure, ocean-themed playgrounds are a hit with kids. To the west, tennis courts (connected to sports clubs), a weightlifting area, and two ping-pong tables represent the park’s lively, sunny side. Meanwhile, the eastern part invites more daydreaming. The only downside: the surroundings are quite "tower blocks" style.
Simply take the open-air footbridge that winds along the park, connecting the two entrances — either from the train station (towards Hall 2, via the "Jardin" staircase) or down the Allée de la 2e D.B — to change your perspective. As you walk through the lush greenery, the views become unexpectedly striking: the foliage in the foreground with the Montparnasse Tower looming in the distance.
So, between trains and while waiting for your departure, all it takes is a climb into the garden to enjoy a genuine escape into nature—far from the busy billboards, but not completely isolated. A hidden garden, perched above the city’s hustle and bustle, where Paris truly takes root… up high.
