In the heart of Paris' Latin Quarter, discover Auguste Comte's apartment-museum. A Maison des Illustres, it plunges us into the philosophy of the founder of French positivism.

He is one of the great figures of 19th-century French philosophy. Auguste Comte is known as the founder of French positivism: a system of thought that believes that the progress of mankind is based on science, not religion. Thus, only knowledge derived from observation, experiment and the scientific method is valid, and should enable the creation of a new social and political order.

The French philosopher and sociologist lived in Paris for many years, and is buried in the Père-Lachaise cemetery. The house in which he lived for over 15 years is now open to the public. This apartment-museum, located in the 6th arrondissement near the Odéon Théâtre de l'Europe, comprises several rooms decorated in Empire style.

The apartment, decor and furnishings have been reconstructed almost identically, based on an inventory of Auguste Comte's personal belongings. We can admire a wooden desk that actually belonged to the thinker, bookcases filled with Comte's personal books, a blackboard he used as a teacher...

The apartment comprises a kitchen and pantry, a dining room, a living room, a study, a classroom, a bedroom, and a room used as a "portrait room".

From the 1950s onwards, Auguste Comte's house was gradually transformed into a museum: the association in charge of the house wanted to preserve the philosopher's spirit and work, and make it accessible to the public through this place so dear to Auguste Comte.

The house has undergone extensive restoration work to preserve its original appearance and ensure that it remains open to the public on a regular basis. Today, the museum is open two days a week, and regularly hosts exhibitions, lectures and readings on the work of Auguste Comte.
