European Heritage Days 2026: Exploring the Louis Braille Museum (77)

Did you know? Louis Braille was born in Coupvray, a town in Seine-et-Marne located about forty kilometers from Paris. In this small town with a rich natural heritage, you can visit the birth house of the man who invented the revolutionary writing system for the blind and visually impaired.

But even before this invention, Louis Braille led a life that was as challenging as it was fascinating. Come discover it by visiting the museum dedicated to him, made possible by Journées du Patrimoine. The 19 and 20 September 2026, the Louis Braille Museum will open its doors to visitors and offer a range of unusual activities for young and old.

Each year, Heritage Days lets us rediscover hidden museums or unsuspected treasures, such as the Louis Braille Museum. For one weekend, you can push open the doors of monuments, castles, ministries, artists’ studios, shops, train stations, and performance venues... Guided tour of the Louis Braille Museum
In the spotlight for European Heritage Days, visit Louis Braille’s birthplace on a guided tour. From the everyday life of a Briard family in the early 19th century to the invention of Braille, this tour traces Braille’s remarkable journey and the story of a script that transformed how blind people read and write. An invitation to discover a living heritage that remains at the heart of transmission and accessibility.

Shifting Perspective: A sensory experience inspired by Plato's Cave
In the Garden of the Five Senses, set off on a voyage inspired by Plato’s Allegory of the Cave. This immersive experience invites visitors to question their perceptions and explore different ways of understanding the world, echoing Louis Braille’s quest for knowledge and his access to learning. The route is offered in several formats to suit all audiences: a family version featuring theatrical mediation, an adult version geared toward reflection, an easy-to-read FALC version, and an option accessible to people with visual impairments. It’s an invitation to share, with family or friends, an experience where everyone can discover the heritage at their own pace and according to their abilities.

Seeing a photograph without really looking at it: a sensory experience
Can you discover a photograph without looking at it? This workshop invites a fresh take on the language of images, engaging touch, listening and imagination. Using photos paired with evocative descriptions, tactile illustrations and ambient sound, participants reconstruct a scene before it’s revealed visually. The exercise highlights the essential role of image descriptions for blind and visually impaired people, then moves on to practical accessibility guidelines for photographs—particularly on social media. A participatory, inclusive activity that invites us to rethink how we view images and the different ways they can be perceived.
