In Paris and the Île-de-France region, several hundred venues are opening their doors to the general public. If you're in Seine-Saint-Denis this Heritage Days weekend, and you love the 7th art, good news...
Abominable, the shared cinema lab, offers special tours during Heritage Days. This creator-focused venue is housed in the former Laboratoires Éclair and its cinema studios, which made the town of Épinay-sur-Seine famous. A landmark in the history of French cinema, it opens this Sunday, September 20, for an unprecedented look behind the scenes of films and television series.
Visit and lecture at the 'Série' building of the former Eclair laboratories
Discover the "Série" building at the former Éclair cinema laboratory site, with the L'Abominable association, which is opening Navire Argo—a space dedicated to analog cinema (www.navireargo.org)—on the Éclair site.
The "Série" building, inaugurated in the early 1990s, was designed for high-volume production of 35mm film copies to stock cinemas across the country. At the time, Éclair was France’s largest film laboratory. The image factory fell silent in 2015 when the company closed the site as projection moved to digital.
Guided visits offer a rare chance to glimpse the impressive machinery still lying at the heart of the building and to learn how film prints were once manufactured.
This year’s tour highlights the role of women in cinema’s analog era, as the association is proud to discuss and showcase the place of women in Éclair’s film history.
The 1-hour visits will be complemented by a short 30-minute talk about the history of women workers in film laboratories and the connections between Éclair in Épinay-sur-Seine and the United States at the turn of the 20th century.
Event organized with the support of the Seine-Saint-Denis Department and the city of Épinay-sur-Seine.
Participation conditions: Limited to 20 people per tour. The first tour departs at 2:30 PM; the conference will be held at 3:45 PM; the second tour begins at 4:30 PM.
