City archives

  • Archive Views - Around Photographic Collections

On the occasion of photography’s bicentennial, this exhibition of documents drawn from Saint-Cloud’s archive collections offers, over two days, a window into the archives’ backstage through the lens of photographic heritage. It aims to reveal to the public a small portion of the city’s preserved photographs while underscoring their essential role— alongside written records—in the construction and transmission of Saint-Cloud’s history. These photographs, sometimes delicate to preserve, will be shown exceptionally for European Heritage Days, viewed through the work carried out behind the scenes by the Heritage and Archives Service in preserving and studying them. The exhibition will foster a dialogue between the photographic archive, the written archive, and the built heritage. It will also question the distinctive status of photography at the intersection of document, object, and work of art. Preserved alternately as a piece of an archive fund and as an element of a heritage collection, photography serves multiple functions and viewpoints, requiring professionals’ expertise to ensure its conservation and promotion. By opening the behind-the-scenes world of patrimonial and archival work, the exhibition aims to make visible a set of fundamental yet often invisible practices: collection, classification, documentation, and above all preventive conservation and research.

Hidden in its green oasis on the heights of the Domaine national de Saint-Cloud, the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) coordinates the global measurement system. It celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2025.

Visitors will be able to tour the Breteuil Pavilion, inaugurated by Louis XIV in 1672, its French-style gardens (the Grand Parterre), and the BIPM’s collection of antique instruments, offering a chance to discover the great scientific figures who shaped the BIPM’s history.

Visits will be conducted in small groups (by reservation only), on Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20, 2026. A guided tour lasting approximately one hour and a half.
