To see life in green during the Journées du Patrimoine 2025, head for Le Vésinet, a magnificent commune in the Yvelines with a fascinating history! Founded in the 19th century, this charming garden city was designed by engineer James Edmund Tarbé to accommodate a wealthy population in search of tranquillity. The Asile Impérial, built by architect Laval at the request of Napoleon III and inaugurated in 1859, is little-known.
With its 31-hectare surface area, chapel, workshops, vegetable garden and dairy farm, the establishment was self-sufficient and offered its residents the possibility of complete rest in an unspoilt setting.
Inaugurated in 1859 by the Duke of Padua, it welcomed convalescent female workers.
In 1949, it became an Établissement National de Convalescence, and in 1993 was renamed Hôpital du Vésinet.
