The Journées du Patrimoine invite you back this autumn for a fresh edition packed with discoveries! This year, the renowned cultural event unfolds over the weekend of September 19–20, 2026 and offers a wealth of great deals, guided tours, and activities right around the corner from you.
Beyond the capital, the regions ofÎle-de-France are also celebrating culture by opening the doors of their historic sites and unusual places free of charge. Prestigious châteaux, emblematic museums, legendary theaters and other little-known addresses all lend themselves to the festivities. In short, a memorable weekend in store, offering a rare opportunity to discover our heritage in a new light!
Greater Paris isn’t left out and is lining up a standout program for the Journées du Patrimoine 2026. Just a few miles from Paris, Saint-Germain-en-Laye renews its participation in the event. The charming town in the Yvelines traces its origins back to the 11th century, when a monastery dedicated to Saint Germain, bishop of Paris, was established on its wooded lands.
However, it was in the 12th century, under the reign of Louis VI, that the fortified castle was built, until Louis XIV decided to turn it into a royal residence in the 17th century, embellishing the château and commissioning a sumptuous park from André Le Nôtre. While the aura of royalty still hovers over its cobbled streets, the timeless charm of Saint-Germain-en-Laye has also inspired artists such as Debussy and Renoir, and continues to seduce creative minds to this day.
Today, the château houses the Musée d'Archéologie Nationale, and the town offers an idyllic setting for strolling between elegant boutiques and verdant parks.

Yet, like a phoenix, it has continually risen from its ashes, becoming a full-fledged art now taken up by contemporary artists. In 2010, Alençon lace was inscribed as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage.

Self-guided visit to Saint-Louis Chapel, commonly known as the Franciscaines Chapel
Exploring the spiritual and historical heritage of the early 20th century.
The Chapel of the Franciscan Nuns is a living spiritual site, rich in history and cultural patrimony, notably around Maurice Denis, Albert Alain, and the brothers André and Paul Véra. In this chapel, the Mass is celebrated in the traditional Latin rite (the usus antiquior) as understood by the notable figures featured in a small leaflet designed to reveal a little-known yet emblematic facet of our city. The Cultural Association Les Franciscaines exists to promote this heritage and to restore it.

Opening of the exhibition "Summer, how I adore you! The Beautiful Season at Paul Vera"
In the wake of the major 2008 exhibition devoted to the brothers Paul and André Vera, three galleries of the museum have been dedicated to Paul Vera’s permanent works and to Thébaïde, the brothers’ home in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, a true Art Deco jewel that has since vanished.
In the final room, the new display spotlights Paul Vera’s splendid summer, the season of summer itself. These Art Deco canvases—the last great artistic movement that retains its modern edge—reveal bathers, workers and allegories under the summer sun. Bright and joyful, Paul Vera’s art pays homage to the season, whether in light sketches or in more elaborate compositions, even echoing the poet Anna de Noailles’ line “Summer, how I love you!”

Free admission to Claude Debussy's Birth House!
Claude Debussy’s Birth House is a city’s heritage jewel. Part of the Ducastel-Vera Municipal Museum, the house serves as the memory site of the great composer, born there on August 22, 1862, and remains the only museum dedicated to Debussy. It is also a precious witness to the history of Saint-Germain-en-Laye and its urban development from the 17th to the 19th century. It is for this reason that the roofs, the courtyard, and the balustraded staircase of the Birth House were listed as Historic Monuments in 1972.

Colette and Music
A writer, playwright and journalist, Colette was also a musician. This concert-reading sheds light on her relationship with music, and on her connections with the composers of her era—Ravel, notably, with whom she collaborated on L'Enfant et les sortilèges for the Paris Opera, but also Messager, Fauré... and Debussy, with whom she shared the pages devoted to musical reports in Gil Blas in 1903.

The Royal Apothecary’s House Reveals Itself
The apothecary, housed in the museum’s old building, is only unveiled on rare occasions. Its collection of blue-patterned faience pots, glass jars, and hand-painted medicinal plant boxes sits within the original Louis XV-era woodwork. Derived from the Hôtel-Dieu de la Charité and the Hôpital Général founded in Saint-Germain-en-Laye in the 17th century, the objects recall medicine from the 17th and 18th centuries.
