On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, the Société d'Encouragement pour l'Industrie Nationale is opening the doors of its headquarters: the Hôtel de l'Industrie, where it was established in 1852. The Société d'Encouragement was founded in 1801 by the three Consuls, Bonaparte, Cambacérès and Lebrun. Recognized as a public utility in 1824, its aim is to support France's industrial development, encourage technological innovation and promote the people behind it.
The Hôtel de l'Industrie was designed to welcome its eminent members, such as Jean-Antoine Chaptal, Louis Pasteur and Gustave Eiffel, and to showcase their inventions. Louis Vicat, chemist and inventor of artificial cement, received numerous grants for his work from the Société d'Encouragement. It was in one of the rooms of the Hôtel de l'Industrie, for example, that the Lumière brothers made their first projection, the founding act of the cinema industry in 1895.
