The Journées du Patrimoine are back! This year they are taking place on September 19 and 20, 2026, and many venues will open their doors to show Parisians and visitors all the secrets of the capital. L'Hôpital Georges-Pompidou is among them and will offer guided tours to explore its distinctive architecture.
But what exactly are the Heritage Days? Launched in 1984, the Heritage Days are a major cultural event in France and in more than 50 European countries. They allow the public to discover cultural heritage through guided tours and activities in historic monuments, government buildings, private residences, industrial sites, and many other places usually closed off. Indeed, guided tours of the Georges-Pompidou Hospital cannot take place at any other time of year than during the Heritage Days.

Opened in 2001, George Pompidou Hospital is a teaching hospital located in Paris and part of the Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP). The hospital stands out for its modern, functional design by architect Aymeric Zublena, featuring a glass-and-metal structure, expansive light-filled spaces, and an environment crafted to provide a calm, reassuring atmosphere for patients and staff.

As part of a partnership between Hôpital européen Georges-Pompidou and University Paris Cité, the Library and Museum Directorate of University Paris Cité invites you to explore a 12-panel exhibition. Loaned by University Paris Cité, the display was conceived by Raphaële Andrault and Ariane Bayle and stems from multidisciplinary research that weaves together the history of medicine, philosophy, and literature.
Pain management is sometimes framed as a modern concern, a practice people overlook in the past. Yet pain was already on the radar during the 16th to 18th centuries. Even though medicine of that era could do little to alleviate it, physicians frequently mention it and continually aimed to ease it. Looking at the 16th–18th centuries allows us to reframe our understanding of this enduring issue.
