The Journées du Patrimoine are back! On the weekend of September 21 and 22, 2024, many places are opening their doors to showcase their cultural riches, and that's the case with the Maison de la Culture du Japon.

This year, the Journées du Patrimoine 2024 will take place over the weekend of September 21 and 22. Every year, these two days are dedicated to discovering France's heritage and cultural wealth. Places sometimes closed to the public open their doors to reveal the secrets of the capital! For the occasion, the Maison de la Culture du Japon is organizing anikebana demonstration.

Launched in France in 1984 by the Ministry of Culture, the Journées du Patrimoine (Heritage Days) are a not-to-be-missed annual event. They offer the public the opportunity to visit fascinating sites, including historic monuments, administrative buildings, cultural venues and private homes. The event even became European in 1991, thanks to the Council of Europe, and attracts millions of visitors! This year, the Maison de la Culture du Japon is getting in on the fun, with a special program for Heritage Days 2024.

The Maison de la culture du Japon in Paris, inaugurated in 1997, is a cultural center located in the 15th arrondissement. Its mission is to promote Japanese culture in France through a rich and varied program that includes art exhibitions, theater and dance performances, film screenings, workshops and conferences. For the Journées du Patrimoine 2024, it is organizing an ikebana demonstration. But what is ikebana? Ikebana is the traditional Japanese art of flower arranging, which emphasizes harmony, balance and simplicity to create poetic compositions.

The program of the Journées du Patrimoine 2024 at the Maison de la Culture du Japon :

  • André's Wings
    Friday, September 19, 2025 - 18:00 ⤏ 20:30

In November 1936, French pilot André Japy attempted a 100-hour Paris-Tokyo raid, but crashed on Mount Sefuri, between Saga and Fukuoka prefectures. Seriously injured, he was rescued by the locals and returned to France some 4 months later. Today, this accident is a symbol of the bonds of friendship between Japan and France.

The "Les Ailes Rouges" project aims to realize the dream that André Japy was unable to fulfill, by restoring his plane, the Caudron Simoun, to attempt the Saga-Tokyo flight again; a flight he was never able to make.

Les Ailes d'André" features two women, Yôko played by Yûko Aoki and Daphné by Vanda Benes, friends for over 40 years in Paris and Marie Antonini in Beaucourt. Through their dialogues in Japanese and French, they share memories, emotions and reflections, and set off in the footsteps of André Japy. Carried away by the resonance between his story and their own, they travel all the way to Beaucourt, Daphné's hometown in France. The play, in three acts, alternates conversation and narration around André Japy's accident and its aftermath. With projected images and musical accompaniment (harpsichord, ocarina, percussion), the reading invites the spectator on a journey between two cultures and two eras.

Before the performance, Stéphane Lanter, president of the Association pour la Renaissance du Caudron Simoun, will talk about the genesis of the project with Nicolas Japy, vice-president of the association and André's grand-nephew. The meeting will be moderated by Cécile Bronn, a doctor of Japanese aeronautical history. This event is a unique opportunity to discover the story of André Japy and develop interest in the aeronautical history of the 1930s, while highlighting the friendship between France and Japan.

After its performance in Paris, the Franco-Japanese reading-show Les Ailes d'André will be given on Sunday September 21 at 3pm at the Foyer Georges Brassens by the association "Les Ailes de l'Amitié" in partnership with the town of Beaucourt, twinned with Kanzaki and the birthplace of André Japy.
