In Paris's 10th arrondissement, there's a discreet address worth a visit: theHôtel Gouthière, now home to the Hector Berlioz Conservatoire. Behind a paved courtyard, this 18th-century neo-classical jewel, built between 1772 and 1780 by François-Victor Perrard de Montreuil, was the ambitious project of Pierre Gouthière (1732-1813), virtuoso chaser-gilder and official supplier to the court of Louis XVI. Its façade evokes a Greek temple, with a staircase guarded by two sphinxes and a tympanum adorned with two nymphs crowning a bust of Apollo. The bas-relief of the Triumph of Bacchus, attributed to Clodion (1738-1814), highlights the entablature. Partly listed as a historic monument since 1927, the building retains its First Empire decor - anteroom, salons and fireplaces - testifying to Gouthière's talent. In 1788, it passed into the hands of Nicolas Hercule Arnoult, who added gypseries, marquetry and murals. After housing a trimmings factory in the 20th century, in 1981 it became the Hector Berlioz Conservatoire, a leading music school attended by 1,200 students.
### Guided tour by Gérard Alaux from Histoire et Vies du 10e
The Hôtel Gouthière, emblematic of the neo-classicism of the late 18th century, has been home to the Conservatoire du 10e arrondissement since 1981 . It is the last remaining trace of a much larger complex built at the request of Pierre Gouthière, a gilder and chaser at the end of the Ancien Régime, in the heart of the rapidly urbanizing Faubourg Saint-Martin. The surviving pavilion reflects the 18th-century vogue for "small houses" for pleasure or profit. It retains its fine antique-inspired decor. After Pierre Gouthière went bankrupt in 1784, his unfinished residence was acquired by his notary, Nicolas Arnoult. At the beginning of the 20th century, a passementerie manufacturer, then other craftsmen, still occupied the premises.
The tour, with commentary by Gérard Alaux of Histoire et Vies du 10e, is available on registration(maximum 20 places per session) and lasts around 45 minutes.
Students from the Conservatoire Hector-Berlioz will perform at the end of the tour. Two concerts will be offered, on Saturday September 20 at 11 a.m. and Sunday September 21 at 11 a.m., featuring musical works linked to the theme of heritage, but also matrimoine, through a program including in particular female composers whose role in the history of music deserves to be better known and recognized.
In addition, on Saturday at 5:30 p.m., a drama show prepared by students in the drama class will enrich this cultural program.
All performances are open to the public, subject to availability.
