The September 19 and 20, 2026, the Heritage Days invite the public to look anew at places that have shaped the history of our regions. While some monuments are well known, others reveal themselves more quietly, along a forest path. This is the case of the Bois de Chaville, in the Hauts-de-Seine, where several remnants recall a past often overlooked at the edge of Paris.
Located between Chaville, Viroflay, Meudon and Ville-d'Avray, this expansive forested ridge is one of the west Île-de-France’s main green lungs. Heir to the old royal and aristocratic hunting grounds, it still bears traces of landscape work carried out over the centuries. Wandering off the most popular paths, visitors can uncover the remains of ancient lime kilns, the remnants of a remarkable verdant amphitheater laid out in the 17th century in the parc de Michel Le Tellier, and other remnants of activities long since disappeared.
These vestiges tell a story in which the exploitation of natural resources, landscape architecture, and daily life intertwine. Long neglected, they are now the focus of a valorization effort led by the City of Chaville and local associations, aimed at better showcasing this heritage hidden beneath the trees. Historical panels installed along the routes help to place these sites back in their context and to illuminate their evolution.
The Heritage Days offer a wonderful opportunity to discover another facet of the Bois de Chaville. Beyond its natural richness, the forest harbors a surprising memory that bears witness to centuries of history in Île-de-France. It’s an invitation to walk the trails in a new way, paying attention to the clues left by the past.
