The Musée de la Préhistoire d'Ile de France is opening its doors free of charge to archaeology enthusiasts for the Journées du Patrimoine, on September 16 and 17, 2023!

The Musée de Préhistoire d'Île-de-France, located in Nemours in the Seine-et-Marne region, houses over two million objects dating back to prehistoric times. There are 2,500 objects on display, covering periods from the Early Palaeolithic to the Second IronAge! The 2023 Heritage Days are a unique opportunity to (re)discover this natural heritage.

Much of the collection comes from archaeological discoveries made by local archaeologists since the 19th century. The first archaeological discoveries in Île-de-France were made by Edmond Doigneau in the Beauregards massif (Nemours). It was not until the inter-war years that Abbé André Nouel, Raoul Daniel and Édouard Soudan found numerous signs of life in these massifs.

It was therefore decided to build a museum in the geological setting of Nemours, in the Stampian sandstone massifs that have been home to peoples since prehistoric times. The grounds, covering several hectares of coniferous trees and oaks, have all the characteristics of a late Palaeolithic ecosystem.

During this special weekend, on September 16 and 17, 2023, young and old alike can take advantage of the open house to admire these exceptional collections and have fun with the special activities.
