In the Île-de-France region, the Musée de l'Homme, on the Place du Trocadéro, is the place to discover theevolution of Man and the lifestyles of our ancestors. In Nemours, in the Seine-et-Marne département, the Musée de Préhistoire d'Île-de-France (Prehistory Museum of Ile-de-France ) takes you back to the origins of man over 600,000 years of history, on an educational tour for all ages.
During your visit, you'll discover how archaeologists examine the ground during excavations, go back in time, from the Early Palaeolithic to the Iron Age... In fact, the rooms are arranged in chronological order, starting with the very first hunter-gatherersand progressing through to the Metal Ages (iron and bronze). Among the unusual treasures in the museum's collections are a mammoth molar, female terracotta statuettes, jewelry, tools and weapons, vases, helmets, axes and more. For families, the museum offers guided tours for children, as well as workshops, bearing in mind that the permanent collections have been designed to be at children's level, and therefore suitable even for the youngest visitors.
The Musée Préhistoire de Nemours is open daily (except Wednesday and Saturday mornings), from 10am to 12:30pm and from 2pm to 5:30pm (except during July and August, when the museum closes at 6pm). The museum is also closed on January 1, May 1, December 25 and 31. The permanent collections and the temporary exhibition room are accessible to people with reduced mobility, provided they have assistance (very steep slope). Admission is €5 full price, €3 reduced price (seniors, under-25s, etc.), and minors are exempt!
To get there, take the Transilien R from Gare de Lyon (Gare de Nemours/Saint Pierre stop), then the STILL bus (line 5, Les Chaudins stop), or take the A6 freeway from Paris.
