Due to the hot weather, Airparif is announcing a new episode of Ozone (O3) pollution this Wednesday, September 6, 2023 in Paris, but also throughout the Île-de-France region.

Beware, pollution is likely to be more intense than usual in the Île-de-France region this Wednesday, September 6, 2023. Due to poor weather conditions(high temperatures), Airparif, the air quality observatory for the Île-de-France region, is announcing a new episode ofOzone O3 pollution this Wednesday in Paris, as well as throughout theÎle-de-France region.

Weather conditions (maximum sunshine and high temperatures) will be conducive to the formation of ozone from pollutants emitted in the region. Air quality will be degraded to poor throughout the Île-de-France region, with a high risk of the information-recommendation threshold being exceeded, warns Airparif.

For this pollution episode, the Préfecture de police has issued a number of recommendations. In particular, the Préfet de police recommends postponing road travel in the Île-de-France region if possible, using the least polluting vehicles, and giving preference to car-sharing, public transport networks and active modes of transport, such as walking or cycling.

It is also advisable to reduce vehicle speeds throughout the Île-de-France region to 110 km/h on freeways normally limited to 130 km/h, to 90 km/h on freeways and expressways normally limited to 110 km/h and to 70 km/h on freeways and expressways normally limited to 90 km/h, as well as on national and departmental roads limited to 80 km/h or 90 km/h.

In the event of an O3 pollution episode, the health authorities' recommendations are as follows:

  • avoid going out in the afternoon when the sun is at its brightest
  • avoid intense physical and sporting activities (including competitions) outdoors; those indoors can be maintained.

In view of this pollution episode, the French Ministry of Health recommends that vulnerable and sensitive people (pregnant women, people suffering from cardiovascular pathologies, asthma sufferers, etc.) prefer shorter outings and those requiring the least effort, as well as avoiding areas with heavy road traffic, especially during peak periods.

Finally, for the rest of the population, the Ministry advises reducing or even postponing intense physical and sporting activities.

For its part, the City of Paris has decided to introduce free residential parking this Wednesday, September 6.
