Airparif announces a particulate pollution episode this Friday, January 19, 2024: the air in Paris and the Île-de-France region is very degraded. This has prompted the Préfecture de Police to issue traffic recommendations. We tell you all about it.

Airparif, the association responsible for monitoring air quality in the Île-de-France region, is announcing an episode of particulate pollution (PM10) for this Friday, January 19, 2024. Airparif expects the information and recommendation threshold of 50 mg/m° to be exceeded. The meteorological conditions forecast by Météo-France are not conducive to effective pollutant dispersion.

In response, Laurent Nunez, Préfet de Police and Préfet de la Zone de défense et de sécurité de Paris, has decided to set up an information and recommendation system to reduce pollutant emissions into the atmosphere.

In a press release, Laurent Nuñez, Préfet de Paris, recommends applying the following instructions throughout the day of January 18, in addition to any more restrictive measures that may be decided as part of the snow and ice episode:

Concerning road traffic:

  • Postpone road travel in the Paris region if possible.
  • Preferably use the least polluting vehicles.
  • Give priority to carpooling, public transport and active modes of transport (walking, cycling, etc.).
  • Reduce vehicle speeds throughout the Île-de-France region:
  • to 110 km/h on freeway sections normally limited to 130 km/h;
  • to 90 km/h on sections of freeways and expressways normally limited to
    110 km/h;
  • at 70 km/h on sections of freeways and expressways normally limited to 90 km/h, and on national and departmental roads limited to 80 km/h or 90 km/h.
  • Transit HGVs with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes must bypass the conurbation via the Ile-de-France ring road.
  • Make use of the facilities set up within professional establishments for commuting (mobility plan, telecommuting, adaptation of working hours, etc.).
  • Control temperatures in buildings by limiting the use of heating.
  • Avoid the use of wood for individual or supplementary heating, which is a major contributor to PM10 emissions.
  • Reduce the operation of fixed installations whose emissions contribute to the pollution episode.

Additional recommendations:

  • Suspend any exemptions to the ban on open-air burning of green waste (including agricultural waste).
  • Postpone the spreading of mineral or organic fertilizers and, if postponement is not possible, give preference to spreading methods with low ammonia emissions.
  • Use rapid effluent burial.
  • Postpone work on dry soil.
