According to information from Le JDD, a fare shield is to be introduced on public transport in the Île-de-France region: from March 7, 2022, a journey on the metro, RER or train will cost no more than 5 euros for those without a Navigo pass.

Public transport in the Île-de-France region continues to evolve: following the announcement of the Navigo pass, which will enable users to obtain discounts at cultural venues, the opening of new stations and the forthcoming arrival of the fully paperless pass on smartphones, Île-de-France Mobilités unveils a new surprise.

This information, unveiled by the JDD on March 6, 2022, was a campaign promise made by Valérie Pécresse during the last regional elections. From this Monday, March 7, a ticket to travel on " all destinations on the network's train and RER lines"will cost no more than 5 euros for those without a Navigo subscription. This"fare shield" will be deployed for the two million people who, every year, sometimes spend up to 8 euros for a single journey in the region.

While Navigo subscribers benefit from a single fare for travel between the different zones of the Île-de-France region, this was not the case for those who bought their ticket individually, who could spend 6 euros for a trip between Châtelet and Trappes.

From now on, a book of ten tickets will cost 40 euros, and a single ticket will be capped at 5 euros. This is good news for many users:"around 21 million journeys a year were made using tickets costing more than 5 euros a trip, by around 2 million people", said Île-de-France Mobilités.

This measure required an investment of 35 million euros, according to the JDD. An essential expense, explains Grégoire de Lasteyrie, vice-president of IDF Mobilités and mayor of Palaiseau (91). "Our aim with this new measure is to encourage occasional travellers in the inner suburbs to make greater use of public transport, and to avoid creating territorial inequalities or fare injustices",he commented.

This price cap should benefit users of the Navigo Liberté+ pass, a transport card that can be used at will, with which you only pay for journeys actually made the previous month. Subscribers to the classic Navigo pass, on the other hand, have more reason to worry about a price increase: the Cour des Comptes (French Court of Audit) has recommended a fare increase to pay off IDF Mobilités' debt.

Navigo pass fares are set to rise again next year. Île-de-France Mobilités has announced an increase of 2.6%, or 86.40 euros per month in 2024, to cross the region by public transport. [Read more]
