Bicycle, scooter, skateboard: is a helmet mandatory for riding?

In Paris, alternative transportation is becoming more and more popular: no more public transportation or cars, now it's time to take a bike! And if you're looking for an even more original way to get around, you may have opted for a scooter (electric or not), a skateboard or rollerblades... In short, it's rolling in all the streets of the capital. But are you riding correctly?

We already know that not all wheeled vehicles can circulate everywhere. Bike paths, roads, sidewalks: to each his place. These rules must ensure the safety of all.

And speaking of safety, what does the law say about passenger protection? Is it compulsory to wear a helmet when riding a bike or a scooter?

The official website of theFrench administration explains the rules very clearly. Cyclists over the age of twelveare not required to wear a helmet, but its use is recommended. For children twelve and under, helmets are mandatory, " whether they are drivers or passengers. (...) The helmet must be fastened. Failure to comply with this obligation is punishable by a fine of up to 750 €. In general, it is a fixed fine of € 135.

For electric scooters, the helmet is recommended but not imposed. Note that children under twelve years are not allowed to use these modes of transport. Users of skateboards, hoverboards (electric skateboards), electric monoroue and rollerblades are not required to wear a helmet either.

The service-public.fr website also reminds that, at night or in dark weather, all these travelers must wear a reflective vest so that they are visible to other road users.
