Ramadan is a holy month in the Hegira calendar. Every year, during this period, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, and this is one of the five pillars. During the day, observers refrain from eating, drinking or having intimate relations. Fasting begins at dawn, with the morning prayer(Salât al-Fajr) and ends at dusk, marked by the fourth prayer of the day, the al-maghrib prayer.
Just as the dates of Ramadan vary by a few days each year due to the fact that the Hegira calendar is based on lunar cycles (which is not the case with the Gregorian calendar), the times of the prayers (and by extension, of the beginning and breaking of the fast) change each day according to the sun. Thus, the time of ftour (or iftar) is shifted by a few minutes each day. Depending on the time of year, the duration of fasting on any given day can become increasingly longer, or on the contrary, shorter.
