What's in store for April 2024? From April 1, 2024, in France, the CAF is raising its social security benefits, roadworthiness tests for two-wheelers are becoming compulsory, and the green card is going away. We take a look at what's changing, and how it could affect your day-to-day life.

From April 1, 2024, there will be a number of changes, from transportation to social assistance, education and health. We take a look at all the changes that await us.

Transport: goodbye green card, hello control!

  • No more green stickers: from now on, registered vehicles are no longer required to have a green sticker or green card. Of course, insurance is still required. The police will be able to check a vehicle's insurance directly via the FVA (Fichier des Véhicules Assurances), using the license plate.

  • Compulsory roadworthiness tests for two-wheelers: From April 15, 2024, motorcycles, scooters and other two-wheelers will have to undergo a roadworthiness test every three years, on pain of a 135 euro fine. The first inspection date will depend on the vehicle's year of registration.

Social benefits: increases

  • In line with inflation, social benefits will be increased by 4.6%. This applies to the Revenu de solidarité active (RSA), the prime d'activité, family allowances, theAllocation aux adultes handicapés (AAH) and housing benefits such as the APL. This increase, in line with annual changes in consumer prices excluding tobacco, reflects the government's commitment to supporting the purchasing power of the most vulnerable French citizens. The RSA will rise to 635.70 euros for single individuals without children, compared with 607 euros previously. For families, the amount rises to 911 euros for a single person with one child, and 1,093 euros for a couple with one child. To find out what you'll receive, simply apply 4.6% on top of what you currently receive.

Education: key dates for Parcoursup

  • This April 3, 2024 marks the deadline for finalizing your Parcoursup file and confirming your wishes on the platform. Admission proposals will begin on May 30, opening up a new stage in the educational journey of future students. So now's the time to wake up if you haven't already.

Winter season: end of the truce

  • The winter truce, which prohibits rental evictions for unpaid rent, nuisance or non-compliance with co-ownership regulations, is coming to an end. This protective measure, effective from November 1 to March 31, designed to protect the most disadvantaged during the coldest months, has been suspended until next November.

Health: increase in medical deductibles

  • From March 31, 2024, the amount of medical deductibles will double, affecting boxes of medicines, procedures carried out by a medical auxiliary and medical transport. So you'll have to be careful when you go to the pharmacy.

Here are a few changes to watch out for. While the increase in the RSA and the abolition of the green sticker are good news, the technical inspection of two-wheelers and the increase in healthcare costs are less so for your wallet.
