Launched in 1982, the Fête de la musique returns across France on June 21, 2026. More than four decades ago, Jack Lang, then Minister of Culture, together with Maurice Fleuret and Christian Dupavillon, an architect-designer and Cabinet member, set out to create a large, popular event that would allow all musicians to perform and gain exposure for one festive evening. The first fête de la musique thus came into being on June 21, 1982.
Since then, the event has grown to become a popular and festive fixture in the eyes of many French people. Every year on the same date, June 21, amateur musicians and singers take to the streets, squares, parks and gardens to perform live music. Sometimes, concerts are even held in churches and museums.
