The Fête de la musique is a popular, festive and free event that many French people look forward to every year. For one day only, budding musicians and singers bring out their instruments to make live music resound in the streets, but also in more unusual places such as museums, churches and institutions.
So, every June 21, it's the same ritual: artists - amateur and professional - pay tribute to music with a host of free concerts and DJ sets, offered on temporary stages set up for the occasion or right on the sidewalk.
