Installation, Sculpture
Vestiges is part of a broader inquiry into memory, nature, and the sacred dimension of life. The artist questions the imprint humanity leaves on its surroundings through a series of symbolic architectures housing sculptural fragments—testimonies of a damaged landscape transformed into precious relics. Working at the intersection of craft and contemporary art, Eugénie Foucaud blends concrete and brass to express the tension between fragility and endurance. The concrete, cracked and raw, evokes relics of an ancient world, while the brass, a material she chisels and gilds by hand, introduces a sacred light, a vital breath that resists disappearance. She creates these pieces as antique fragments, valued for their age and as traces of a bygone era.
The installation comprises three wooden architectural structures. These volumes, inspired by universal historical edifices, are rendered in a minimalist language that nods to sacred geometry—the symbolic foundation of sacred architectures that connect humankind to a higher principle. The aim is to link her works to these forms, sacralizing nature by embedding it in constructions that, though temporary, evoke the permanence of the sacred. Through this setup, the artist seeks to forge a dialogue between the works and the space, creating a meeting place for reflection at the intersection of nature, architecture, and the sacred. Inside, fragments of gilded concrete become contemporary relics, like remains of a lost civilization, while also serving as a metaphor for nature that persists and revives within matter. The three structures are arranged in an open triangular layout, inviting viewers to move among them along an immersive path. Each volume defines a distinct symbolic space, while engaging with the others through proportion and the resonance of their materials. The lighting, subdued and directional, highlights the brass reflections and the texture of the concrete, fostering a contemplative atmosphere. The light, at times revealing, at times mystical, extends the artist’s gesture of sanctifying nature by translating it into the realm of art.
The work probes our relationship to memory, to time, and to the environment. At the crossroads of imaginative archaeology and contemporary ritual, this installation transforms the exhibition space into a silent sanctuary dedicated to nature and its resilience.
Eugénie Foucaud explores the bonds uniting humans and nature. Her practice pursues a deeper understanding of the interdependence of these forces and the search for an original balance. She examines how nature and humanity feed off one another, while underscoring society’s responsibility to safeguard this fragile ecosystem.
