A sequel to Mamma Mia!, the film toggles between two timelines. In the present, Sophie is preparing the opening of the Bella Donna hotel, built in tribute to her mother. In the past, young Donna leaves Oxford, travels across Europe, and lands on the Greek island of Kalokairi, where her encounters with Harry, Bill, and Sam will shape her story.
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again works as both a sequel and a prequel. The story mirrors Sophie and Donna, weaving themes of family lineage, motherhood, and matters of the heart, while expanding the musical universe rooted in ABBA’s repertoire.
Ol Parker takes the helm from Phyllida Lloyd, a decade after the original film. The cast brings back the franchise’s familiar faces and introduces a new generation led by Lily James, Jeremy Irvine, Josh Dylan, and Hugh Skinner. Cher joins the ensemble in the role of Ruby Sheridan, Donna’s mother.
The film keeps a direct link to the original stage world, with Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus on board as executive producers. Filming the island-set scenes took place in Croatia, on Vis Island, which stands in for Kalokairi.
