The Nun, a spin-off from the Conjuring universe focusing on the demonic entity Valak, is headed to Netflix on September 13, 2026. Directed by Corin Hardy and released in French cinemas in 2018, this horror film featuring Taissa Farmiga, Demian Bichir and Bonnie Aarons expands the story of the nun first introduced two years earlier in Conjuring 2: The Enfield Case.
The story unfolds in 1952, well before Ed and Lorraine Warren’s most famous investigations. When a young nun commits suicide at an isolated Romanian abbey, the Vatican sends Father Burke, a priest tasked with probing unexplained phenomena, accompanied by Sister Irene, a novice who hasn’t taken her vows yet.
With the help of Frenchie, the man who found the nun’s body, they infiltrate an abbey where the residents seem to live under the threat of an ancient presence. Their investigation gradually leads them to Valak, the entity that appears as a nun and seeks to break free from the limits that keep it confined to these walls.
The Nun builds on one of the figures introduced in Conjuring 2. In James Wan’s film, Valak went after Lorraine Warren and already wore this religious guise. The spin-off travels back several decades to craft an autonomous backstory for the demon and to explain its presence in the Conjuring universe.
Directed by Corin Hardy, The Nun is scripted by Gary Dauberman, already the author of Annabelle and co-screenwriter of It. James Wan and Peter Safran produce the film, while Bonnie Aarons reprises the role of Valak she previously played in Conjuring 2: The Enfield Case.
The film also sets itself apart from its predecessors through its setting. The action moves away from the American and British family homes of the early Conjuring and Annabelle entries and into an isolated Romanian abbey. The catacombs, the corridors of the monastery, and its religious surroundings become the main arena for this supernatural showdown.
In cinema release order, The Nun constitutes the fifth film in the Conjuring Universe, after Conjuring: The Warren Dossiers, Annabelle, Conjuring 2: The Enfield Case and Annabelle: Creation. In the chronology of the story, its plot set in 1952 makes it, however, the first of the films currently affected by this Netflix arrival.
Valak will then return to the foreground in La Nonne : La Malédiction de Sainte-Lucie, released in 2023 and set a few years after the events of that first installment.
This latest Netflix arrival covers a large swath of the franchise: eight films from the Conjuring universe join Netflix on September 13, 2026: Conjuring: The Warren Files, Annabelle, Conjuring 2: The Enfield Case, Annabelle: Creation, The Nun, Annabelle Comes Home, Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and The Nun II: The Saint Lucia Curse.
The Nun will be available on Netflix starting September 13, 2026, alongside seven other films from the Conjuring Universe.
