Directed by Éric Lartigau, #JeSuisLà is a Franco-Korean romantic comedy combining a change of scenery and a quest for love. Starring Alain Chabat and Doona Bae, it explores human connections in the age of social networks, between the Basque country and Seoul.
#JeSuisLà will be available on Netflix from June 4, 2025.
Stéphane, a chef based in the Basque country, leads a quiet life between his grown-up sons, his ex-wife and his restaurant. But he has an intense virtual correspondence with Soo, a young South Korean woman he met online. On a whim, he decides to fly to Seoul to meet her, unaware of what awaits him there.
Netflix offers this warm, exotic comedy, which blends culture shock with a quest for romance.
Synopsis: Stéphane leads a quiet life in the Basque country, between his two grown-up sons, his ex-wife and his job as a chef. The little thrill that everyone dreams of, he finds on social networks where he exchanges daily with Soo, a young South Korean woman. On a whim, he decides to fly to Korea in the hope of meeting her. As soon as he arrives at Seoul airport, a whole new world opens up to him...
#JeSuisLà could appeal to viewers fond of contemporary sentimental comedies, with their bittersweet tone and attention to human connection at a distance. Those who enjoyed Un + une, Her or Lost in Translation might find the same sensibility, between melancholy and hope.
The film is written and directed by Éric Lartigau, in collaboration with Thomas Bidegain. It marks the reunion between the filmmaker and Alain Chabat after Prête-moi ta main. The cast also includes Doona Bae, revealed in Sense8, Blanche Gardin and Jules Sagot. Initially released in cinemas in February 2020, the film will benefit from new exposure via its release on Netflix.
#JeSuisLà is a romantic comedy starring Alain Chabat, which explores the boundaries between the real and the virtual in a gentle, poetic and resolutely modern story. Set between the Basque Country and Seoul, the film takes a tender look at unlikely encounters in the digital age.
Our opinion on #JeSuisLà
Right from the start, the pace of the film is rather slow, due to Stéphane's peaceful, uneventful life. But his daily discussions with Soo via social networks add a little interest to the story and arouse curiosity: will this lead to a love story? Will his unsuspecting family and friends discover why Stéphane's behavior has suddenly changed? Will Stéphane finally meet Soo?
When Stéphane decides on a whim to travel to Korea to finally meet her, we think it's the start of a great adventure...but it's not. The script runs out of steam pretty quickly, and the pace becomes slower and slower, letting the story go round in circles. The screenplay idea is good, but under-exploited and lacking dynamism.
Nonetheless, Alain Chabat is the perfect embodiment of a character in the throes of self-questioning, self-discovery and a new world.
