The Witches on TFX: Anne Hathaway becomes the Grand High Witch

The Witches will air on TFX. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, the 2020 film adapts Roald Dahl’s novel, with Anne Hathaway as the Grand High Witch and Octavia Spencer as a grandmother determined to protect her grandson.

In 1967, an orphaned young boy moves in with his grandmother in Alabama. When they discover that witches are prowling nearby, they seek refuge in a seaside hotel. But the place they’ve arrived at is hosting a gathering organized by the Grand Witch, who is plotting to rid the world of children.

In this world, witches mask their true nature behind an ordinary disguise. A boy and his grandmother must learn to spot them before they can foil their scheme. Stanley Tucci plays the hotel’s manager, while Chris Rock voices the narrator in the original version.

This adaptation follows Nicolas Roeg's 1990 film, in which Anjelica Huston played the Grand Witch. Robert Zemeckis writes the screenplay with Kenya Barris and Guillermo del Toro, relocating the story to 1960s United States. The tale preserves the transformations and the threats against children that characterize Roald Dahl's book.
