Ténor is a French comedy directed by Claude Zidi Jr. that blends the contrasting worlds of rap andopera. The film follows Antoine, a young man from the suburbs with a passion for rap battles, whose life is turned upside down after a chance encounter at the Opéra Garnier. This feature-length film puts the spotlight on atypical career paths and unsuspected talents, bringing together on-screen Michèle Laroque, Mohamed Belkhir (better known as MB14) and Guillaume Duhesme.
Ténor will be available on Netflix from May 1, 2025.

Synopsis: Antoine, a young Parisian suburbanite, studies accountancy without much conviction, dividing his time between his talented rap battles and his job as a sushi delivery boy. During a run at the Opéra Garnier, his path crosses that of Mme Loyseau, a singing teacher at the venerable institution, who detects in Antoine a raw talent to be nurtured. Despite his lack of operatic culture, Antoine is fascinated by this form of expression and is persuaded to follow Madame Loyseau's teaching. Antoine has no choice but to lie to his family, friends and the entire city, for whom opera is a bourgeois affair, far removed from their world.
Ténor might appeal to viewers who enjoy tales of overcoming one's limitations and blending musical genres, in the manner of La Mélodie or Les Choristes. The film explores cultural clashes with a touch of humor and emotion, in an original setting little explored by French comedy.
Ténor tells a story of personal transformation driven by a double passion: rap and opera. Thanks to a cast combining established actors and the new generation, this contemporary musical comedy is aimed at an audience sensitive to stories of social ascension through art.
Our opinion of Ténor:
Ténor is a highly enjoyable comedy featuring the kind of culture shock we love! While we've been used to seeing a mix of genres in cinema for some time now, in the field of dance, it's quite rare to see a singer capable of immersing himself in both worlds as much as the singer MB14.
We really liked Michèle Laroque's character, who is both strong and fragile, and who totally assumes who she is with a great deal of humor and self-deprecation! Madame Loyseau is an inspiring woman, whom we want to take as an example.
We could have wished for a more pronounced mix, with RAP in opera or opera in RAP. However, we loved (re)discovering classical music through the amazed eyes of MB14, whose character declares, after attending a rehearsal at the Paris Opera, that he wants to be able to "give this emotion" to his audience.
All in all, a fine piece of entertainment that puts culture center stage! And be warned: you won't leave the theater without shedding a tear!
