A regular at the Cannes Film Festival, Kirill Serebrennikov presented his latest film in competition. After the masterpiece Leto, and Petrov's Fever, this new feature film, Tchaikovsky's Wife, is expected in theaters on February 15, 2023.
Kirill Serebrennikov's filmography consists most often in examining Russian society, and especially its flaws. A project that led him to be condemned by the justice of the country and put under house arrest. In Tchaikovsky's Wife, this is also the case, but in a much more subtle way. We discover Antonina Miliukova, in 19th century Russia. This young musician meets and falls in love with the composer Piotr Tchaikovsky. But the love she has for him turns into an obsession and the young woman is violently rejected. Tchaikovsky being homosexual, Antonina agrees to endure everything to stay with him.
The story is not well known, but it has been told many times, and it is not with his script that the filmmaker could have managed to surprise. So he decided to do what he does best: sign an absolutely brilliant direction from beginning to end. While the film begins as a classic biopic, the direction gradually melts into the personality of its protagonist, who falls into madness as her famous husband rejects her. This results in a baroque flamboyance that borders on overkill. If you have seen Petrov's Fever, you know what Serebrennikov is capable of!
The result is a unique work, mastered from start to finish, sometimes suffocating, and which does not leave anyone indifferent.
