Published by Nathanaël de Sortiraparis · Published on July 6th, 2023 at 03:30 p.m.
Filmed shortly before the death of the genius composer of over 500 films, "Ennio" will be broadcast on Canal+ this Thursday, July 6. Directed by Giuseppe Tornatore ("Cinema Paradiso"), the documentary retraces the entire life of Ennio Morricone, with his testimony and that of dozens of personalities from the worlds of music and cinema.

Touching genius at your fingertips is a vertiginous experience. With Ennio, director Giuseppe Tornatore(Cinema Paradiso, The Best Offer) tackles one of the greatest myths in the history of cinema, Ennio Morricone. A composer of genius, the Italian signed the soundtracks of over 500 films, most of them cult hits: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in the West, The Professional, Fear in the City, The Dirty Eight and many others. He is undoubtedly the composer most recognized by the general public, thanks to his highly recognizable notes. The film is broadcast this Thursday, July 6 at 11:45pm on Canal+.

Through numerous interviews, with Ennio Morricone on the one hand (filmed before his death in 2020), but also with numerous personalities from the worlds of music and cinema (Clint Eastwood, Bruce Springsteen, John Williams, Quentin Tarantino), the film retraces his entire life and career. It's fascinating to see how his work is constructed, how his compositions respond to one another. From film to film, his style grows richer, and he invents things that no one has ever heard before. There's something thrilling about learning so many secrets about his life and work, and the composer's biggest fans will be left wanting more, despite the nearly 3-hour film, since it's impossible to talk about every detail.

For cinephiles, this documentary is an event not to be missed under any circumstances, so much so that director Giuseppe Tornatore (who has collaborated with Morricone on virtually all his films) screams his love of cinema. You'll come away with stars in your eyes, such is the passion overflowing from this ultimately humble work. All his life, Morricone was highly critical of his own work, never having had a predisposition for music and not necessarily liking his compositions, even the greatest. You can even take advantage of the Fête du cinéma to discover him!
