Presented in the Cannes Première section at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, As Bestas went on to win the César for Best Foreign Film in 2023. The movie sits within Rodrigo Sorogoyen's body of work exploring psychological tension, power dynamics, and social fractures.
Our Take on As Bestas
Rodrigo Sorogoyen, the most popular Spanish filmmaker of the moment, returns with a new hard-hitting movie. As Bestas nabbed the César for Best Foreign Film this Friday, February 24. This stark, unflinching title was among our favorites at the Cannes Film Festival 2022, where it was shown in the Cannes Première section. Yet the feature could easily have fit into the official competition, or even the palmarès.
After filming a Spaniard in France in Madre, the director turns the lens the other way and centers on a French couple in Spain. Antoine and Olga, played by Denis Ménochet and Marina Foïs, are farmers in a small Galician village, but their presence annoys the locals. The residents will stop at nothing to make their lives difficult. Beneath this deceptively simple premise lies a throbbing thriller. As usual, Sorogoyen builds tension over time, with long takes that prime the audience for dread, often via small, almost invisible details in the background.
As Bestas is a brutal, unforgettable jolt. Undoubtedly one of the best films of the year. Denis Ménochet once again proves he’s among the top French actors of his generation, and Marina Foïs shows there’s much more to her than comedy. The two Spanish actors playing the difficult neighbors, Luis Zahera and Diego Anido, are not left behind and manage to be terrifying with nothing more than a look. Besides being a masterclass in direction, it’s a triumph for the performances, not to be missed under any circumstances.
