You knew her in the role of Felicity, at the end of the 90s, Keri Russell, is back in the movies in Crazy Bear (Cocaine Bear in original version). A completely crazy film, however, inspired by a true story: that of a brown bear who became crazy and murderous after ingesting cocaine. The movie will be released in theaters on March 15, 2023.
Crazy Bear is directed by Elizabeth Banks(Charlie's Angels). This is her most ambitious film, and the most successful! She directs also, O'Shea Jackson Jr, Alden Ehrenreich, and Ray Liotta . The film is dedicated to the latter, who died last May. Crazy Bear is the last film he shot.
Our opinion
From its introduction scene, the film announces itself as a very big delirium as scary as silly. And despite its parodic aspect, Crazy Bear is directed and staged with a lot of seriousness. Like Alexandre Aja(Piranha 3D, Crawl), Elizabeth Banks considers that just because her film is a B-movie doesn't mean that it doesn't need to be carefully directed, as is the case with too many films of this genre. Better known for her work as an actress, the director reveals here all her talent, and we appreciate it a lot. We note that the plot takes place at the same time as the real story, in 1985, and that the computer-generated images that animate the bear of the title are frankly successful, given the budget of the film.
After the animal goes crazy, a whole gallery of characters are trapped in the forest where it is rampant: children who are playing hooky, the mother of one of them who is looking for them, the traffickers who are looking for their cocaine, the policeman who is chasing them and many others. From then on, the light-hearted comedy becomes a real horror film with a series of gory deaths that would make the most hematophobic swoon. That's what we love about Crazy Bear, the film works as much in its comedic aspect as in its horrific one, and one never encroaches on the other. It's a beautiful balancing act with a perfect balance. The result is a feature film with perfectly homogeneous themes.
Special mention to Ray Liotta who, a few months before his death, delivered this brilliant performance in the role of the infamous Syd, a cruel and greedy drug lord. Even in such an absurd score, he did wonderfully. He will be greatly missed!
The film is based on an amazing story: in 1985 a shipment of cocaine disappeared after the plane that was carrying it crashed, and was in fact ingested by a brown bear. Crazy Bear is a black comedy about a mismatched group of cops, criminals, tourists and teenagers who all converge in the heart of a forest in the depths of Georgia to the very place where a super predator of more than 200 kilos is roaming, enraged and bloodthirsty, driven completely crazy by the ingestion of a huge dose of cocaine.
