À la belle étoile is a French film directed by Sébastien Tulard and written by Cédric Ido. Released in theaters on February 22, 2023, this blend of comedy and drama chronicles the journey of pastry chef Yazid Ichemrahen. Led by Riadh Belaïche, alongside Marwan Amesker and Loubna Abidar, the film will be available on Netflix starting February 22, 2026. It was also in competition at the Alpe d’Huez International Comedy Film Festival 2023.
Yazid, a pastry enthusiast since his teenage years, grew up bouncing between foster homes and family settings. Shaped by an unstable childhood, he developed a strong-willed, sometimes unyielding personality. From his early training in the provinces to working in the renowned kitchens of Paris and Monaco, his unwavering goal remains the same: to join prestigious establishments and establish himself as a celebrated pastry chef.
The story traces his rise, shaped by dedication, discipline, and self-reflection. Between ambition and vulnerability, the film delves into the relentless pursuit of perfection by a young man determined to turn his past struggles into his greatest strength. Culinary passion becomes more than just a skill—it evolves into a language of liberation and self-empowerment.
The project was born out of producers Laurence Lascary and Lahoucine Grimich’s desire to bring Yazid Ichemrahen’s inspiring journey to the big screen, inspired by an article about his book. Cédric Ido penned the screenplay before handing over directorial duties to Sébastien Tulard. At the time, Tulard was recovering from cancer, and he saw this film as a meaningful personal milestone, describing the project as a crucial part of his own healing process.
The film tells the true story of Yazid Ichemrahen’s journey. He trained with renowned figures like Pascal Caffet, Angelo Musa, and Philippe Conticini before claiming the title of World Champion in ice cream desserts in 2014. His involvement in the project helps strike a balance between factual biography and fictionalized elements.
To take on the lead role, Riadh Belaïche — popularly known as Just Riadh — underwent training in pastry arts and ice sculpture to master the necessary professional skills. This debut in a leading cinematic role marks a significant milestone in his acting journey, following appearances in 30 Days Max and The Good Conduct. The film features a traditional approach to the social rise biopic, focusing on learning and mentorship making it a classic storytelling framework.
