In this documentary directed by Frenchman Nicolas Philibert, we discover the daily life of L'Adamant, a unique day center. The film won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale, one of the biggest film festivals in the world. It will be released in theaters on April 19.

It's an eventful release! With the Cannes Festival and the Venice Mostra, the Berlinale is one of the three most important film festivals in the world. And as in Venice with All the Beauty and the Spilled Blood, it is a documentary that won the Golden Bear in Berlin, and a French one! Sur L'Adamant, by Nicolas Philibert, is expected in theaters on April 19, 2023.

The trailer of Sur L'Adamant

L'Adamant is a boat that can be found on the banks of the Seine in Paris. In this rather special building, volunteers welcome adults suffering from psychological disorders every day , offering them a care setting that helps them reconnect with the outside world. In fact, filmmaker Nicolas Philibert spends almost two hours filming people ravaged by life, with often sordid histories, and whose sufferings are numerous. However, the film is never miserabilistic or condescending.

On the contrary, it films the daily life of this floating building, touching moments that bring hope. Neither the film nor the filmmaker put into words the illnesses from which the filmed suffer, but fortunately, this is not the subject. We are especially impressed by the power of the testimonies. It is easy to understand why Nicolas Philibert decided to put his cameras on this boat, the occupants of the Adamant are real movie characters.

"There are actors here who don't know they are actors", says one of them in front of the camera, and this is exactly the impression that comes out at the end of the film. The Adamant is a center attached to a psychiatric site, one of the last of its kind. With this film, Nicolas Philibert wants to show that this type of place must be preserved at all costs.
