Where and when can you see The Queen's Game?

The Queen's Game will be available on Prime Video from August 27, 2025.

Synopsis: Catherine Parr, last wife of King Henry VIII, is the only survivor of this feared sovereign. A determined strategist, she navigates a world of power and danger to defend her convictions.

A historical portrait revisited

The Queen's Game adopts a deliberately fictional tone to offer a feminist vision of Catherine Parr. The film focuses on the strength of character and ingenuity of this queen, capable of standing up to a monarch portrayed as massive and terrifying.

A striking pair of actors

Alicia Vikander and Jude Law, who previously shared the stage in Anna Karenina, carry most of the plot. Their performances are central to the dramatic tension of the story.

Target audience and comparisons

The Queen's Game could appeal to fans of historical dramas and costume stories, especially those who enjoyed Marie-Antoinette or Elizabeth. The film stands out for its focus on a female character rarely represented in fiction.

Our review of Le Jeu de la Reine :

Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz returns to the film scene with his new film, Le Jeu de la Reine, which was presented in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. The film, a historical biopic, stars Alicia Vikander and Jude Law and tells the story of Catherine Parr, the sixth and last wife of King Henry VIII of England.

She is best known for being the only woman to survive this tyrannical ruler. Jude Law plays King Henry VIII, and the acting duo reunite almost ten years after their collaboration in Joe Wright's Anna Karenina. And their collaboration works! The film's main attraction lies in the performances of its two stars, who could well be rewarded at the box-office.

From the outset,"The Queen's Game" assumes a largely fictional character, and paints an impressive, feminist portrait of Catherine Parr, a woman with the strength of her convictions, who doesn't hesitate to oppose the monstrous Henry VIII. This makes for some fine staging ideas. Jude Law, portrayed as a massive, terrifying ogre, loses the upper hand to his slender, seemingly frail wife, who redoubles her ingenuity to make her voice heard.

Costume biopics are a perilous exercise, but Karim Aïnouz pulls it off rather well, even better than Maïwenn, who dealt with a similar subject with her Jeanne du Barry, which opened the Cannes Film Festival. It was important to shed light on the destiny of this historically forgotten figure, who nonetheless deserves the full attention of enthusiasts.
