This is no ordinary film! Vincent doit mourir (Vincent must die), directed by Stéphan Castang, is a dark comedy combining horror and fantasy, scheduled for release on November 15.
The story follows Vincent, played by Karim Leklou, who suddenly finds himself attacked by strangers for no apparent reason, seeking to kill him. Despite his attempts to continue leading a normal life, the phenomenon continues to grow, forcing Vincent to flee and change his lifestyle completely.
And let's face it, Stéphan Castang's first film is a real UFO. At the Critics' Week screening, the director described his work as akin to a zombie film, and that's exactly what it is. No infection a priori, but when Vincent meets another's gaze, the latter becomes possessed and goes into a rage of extreme violence. Visually impressive, these scenes of rage are terrifying. Yet they're often defused by a wicked sense of humor that elicits hearty laughter.
With such a wildly improbable pitch, one might have feared that the film would get bogged down in a form of repetition, as is often the case with high-concept films. But that's not the case here, as the script manages to renew itself around three very distinct acts, each adopting a very distinct genre: horror comedy, paranoid thriller and romance. And it works! It's a brilliant first film, with the symbolism of an increasingly violent and individualistic society pushed to the extreme.
