At high school, Ruby wants to blend in; in the ocean, a very different future awaits her. Ruby, Teenage Kraken airs on Gulli Monday, October 26, 2026 at 9:05 PM, then repeats on Friday, October 30 at 7:15 PM. The film by Kirk DeMicco, produced by DreamWorks Animation, was released in France on June 28, 2023.
The teenager discovers she belongs to a royal line of krakens. While her mother forbids her from venturing into the ocean, her grandmother is waiting for her in this underwater world. This collision between everyday high school life and a family lineage sets the stage for this animated comedy.
Our review published on the film's release:
This mythological-flavored comedy plunges us to the depths of the ocean to reveal a marvelous, pulsating world imbued with heroism. At 16, Ruby Gillman embodies rebellious adolescence, in search of meaning and in open conflict with her parents. The film tackles several themes—deceit, courage and duty. The many endearing characters also spark our curiosity with their humor and devotion.
Between the Kraken and the Sirens, fantasy creatures take center stage in this animated comedy, offering several nods to Greek and Norse mythologies. The film's soundtrack by Stephanie Economou perfectly accompanies this dive into wondrous waters, with lively, infectious tones.
While Ruby, the Teen Kraken may not quite reach DreamWorks' classics, we still don't hide our delight, reuniting a top-tier cast with the voices of Jane Fonda, Lana Condor (To All the Boys I've Loved Before) and Toni Collette (The Sixth Sense, Knives Out).
Visually, Ruby, the Teen Kraken offers a colorful, wondrous world that invites a true underwater plunge. The Kraken realm and the city of Oceanside showcase striking imagery, immersing us visually in a bright, dazzling universe. We gladly dive into this kids' film, which can also enchant adults!
