Adapted from Laetitia Colombani's 5-million-selling bestseller, "La Tresse" follows the destinies of three women from three different countries, each facing intense challenges.

La Tresse, directed by Laetitia Colombani and adapted from her own book, offers a tender look at the lives of three women, Smita, Giulia, and Sarah, living in distant corners of the globe, but linked by their personal struggles. La Tresse is scheduled for release on November 29, 2023.

La Tresse trailer

The film takes us to India, where we meet Smita, an untouchable woman desperate to lift her daughter out of poverty by giving her an education. In Italy, Giulia works in her father's workshop, but her life is turned upside down when the family business collapses following an accident. Finally, in Canada, Sarah, a renowned lawyer, is about to take over her own practice, but a new doctor upsets her plans. The film interweaves the stories of these three lives, linked by destiny yet never intersecting.

And if the film upset millions of readers, I'm not sure the movie will do the same. If you loved the book, or if you're sensitive to maudlin dramas, you'll be right at home with La Tresse. However, the film suffers from extremely flat direction and a clichéd screenplay, making it ridiculous at times. The film misses the mark as a dense portrait of 21st-century women from every angle. It's meant to be universal in a way, but it's hard to identify with the characters, so much so that they correspond to tropes seen a thousand times.

Nevertheless, the film's formal ambition is noteworthy. That a work produced in France should be shot in Hindi, Italian and English is unusual and remarkable, and the work of Laetitia Colombani (who was already a director before becoming a novelist) is to be commended for this.
