Sleepless City (Ciudad Sin Sueño) by Guillermo Galoe, selected for Critics' Week 2025

After several short films, director Guillermo Galoe unveils his first feature film, Sleepless City (Ciudad Sin Sueño), at Critics' Week 2025.

La Semaine de la Critique, the emblematic parallel section of the Cannes 2025 Festival dedicated to the discovery of young filmmakers, has revealed the official selection for its 64th edition.

True to its mission of promoting first and second feature films, both French and international, this year's selection features 11 works: 7 films in competition and 4 films in special screenings.

After several short films, two of which were screened at Cannes, director Guillermo Galoe is back on the Croisette with his first feature film, Sleepless City (Ciudad Sin Sueño in the original version).

La Semaine de la Critique 's biography of the director: "Guillermo Galoe was born in Madrid, Spain. His first film, Fragil Equilibrio, won the Goya for best feature documentary after its world premiere at IDFA. His short film Aunque es de noche (2023) is selected in Official Competition at the Cannes Film Festival, wins the Goya for best fiction short, and is part of the César 2025 selection. Also at the Cannes Festival, in 2023, his short As Gaivotas Cortam O Ceu was presented at the Quinzaine des Cinéastes."

Sleepless City (Ciudad Sin Sueño) will be unveiled at the Cannes Film Festival 2025. The release date in French cinemas is not yet known.

Synopsis: Toni, a 15-year-old Roma boy, lives in Europe's largest illegal shantytown on the outskirts of Madrid. Proud to belong to his family of scrap merchants, he follows his grandfather everywhere. But as their land falls prey to demolition, the family becomes divided: while some choose to move to the city, his grandfather refuses to leave their land. As the nights go by, Toni is forced to make a choice: head for an uncertain future, or cling to the world of her childhood.
