It's one of the most eagerly awaited parallel selections at Cannes 2025. Every year, Semaine de la Critique reveals new voices in cinema, showcasing first and second features from around the world.
For its 64th edition, the festival is unveiling a selection of 11 films: 7 will compete for awards, while 4 will be unveiled in special screenings. The competition will feature Left-Handed Girl by Shih-Ching Tsou, director and producer of films by Sean Baker, winner of last year's Palme d'Or with Anora.
La Semaine de la Critique 's biography of the director: "Shih-Ching Tsou is a Taiwanese-American producer, director and actress. She co-directed the film Take Out (2004) with Sean Baker. She also produced Sean Baker's Starlet (2012), Tangerine (2015), The Florida Project (2017), and Red Rocket (2021)."
Left-Handed Girl will be unveiled at the Cannes Film Festival 2025. The release date in French cinemas is not yet known.
Synopsis: A single mother and her two daughters arrive in Taipei to open a small canteen in the heart of the Taiwanese capital's night market. Each of them has to find a way to adapt to this new life and manage to maintain the family unit.
