In Entroncamento, a small satellite town on the outskirts of Lisbon, life is tough and trafficking is rife. This is where Pedro Cabeleira was born, and this is where the plot (or rather, the plots, for there are many of them) of his new feature film - his second - unfolds, soberly titled after the town and unveiled at the Cannes 2025 Film Festival's Quinzaine des Cinéastes. A city on the scale of a neighborhood (or perhaps the reverse), where everyone knows each other, looks up to each other and clashes, in turf wars and conflicts of loyalty.
Fleeing a troubled past, Laura takes refuge in Entroncamento in the hope of a better life. She befriends a disillusioned youth not so different from herself. Between violence, bad luck and greed, the city's streets never sleep. Loud and spirited, Entroncamento looks the truth in the face. Camera-ready, in an almost naturalistic style filmed largely at night, Pedro Cabeleira's work is as much a whodunit set to synthetic music as it is a social chronicle of the drug underworld.
Where the petty delinquency of young thugs follows the trajectory of more seasoned gangsters, the multitude of characters evolve in the separate world of this decrepit suburb, where encounters, ruptures and betrayals form the basis of a society on the margins, swept up in a whirlwind of violence and vengeance. But while most dream of greater things, not everyone will make it.
Entroncamento will be unveiled at the Cannes Film Festival 2025. The release date in French cinemas is not yet known.
Synopsis: Fleeing a troubled past, Laura takes refuge in Entroncamento to rebuild her life, and befriends a disillusioned youth not so different from herself. Can honest work compete with the call of crime? Violence, bad luck, greed and loyalty rule the streets - everyone wants a better life.
