Animation science-fiction film, Arco by Ugo Bienvenu follows the story of a young girl from 2075 who encounters a boy from the future. It will be available on VOD starting February 17, 2026.

Directed by Ugo Bienvenu and co-written with Félix de Givry, Arco is a captivating 2D animated film that blends adventure and science fiction. Featuring the voices of Swann Arlaud, Alma Jodorowsky, and Margot Ringard Oldra, the movie, which was released in French theaters on October 22, 2025, will be available on VOD starting February 17, 2026. Aimed at families with children aged 8 and up, it continues a tradition of heartfelt coming-of-age stories while offering a serene, futuristic vision.

In 2075, ten-year-old Iris leads a typical life until an unexpected event turns her world upside down. A mysterious boy dressed in a rainbow-colored suit literally falls from the sky. His name is Arco, and he appears disoriented, as if torn from a different time. It quickly becomes clear to Iris that he doesn’t belong to her world.

Arco comes from a distant future where humanity has achieved a harmonious coexistence with nature and time travel has become a reality. Rescued by Iris, he struggles to understand what brought him back to this uncertain past. Together, the two children embark on an adventure rooted in solidarity and trust, driven by a shared goal: helping Arco return home without disrupting the delicate balance of the present.

The teaser for Arco

Arco

The origins of the film stem from a powerful image conceived by Ugo Bienvenu: that of a “rainbow child” falling from the sky. This initial drawing, sent to Félix de Givry, served as the foundation for developing both the visual style and the story. The project was driven by a desire for simplicity and harmony, steering clear of a dystopian future and instead crafting a peaceful world where technology and nature coexist seamlessly.

The decision to use 2D animation reflects a conscious commitment to traditional craftsmanship. Ugo Bienvenu, with a background in drawing and illustration, worked closely with TVPaint software to maintain the texture and subtlety of his line work. The entire production was carried out in Paris by an in-house team, ensuring consistent artistic style and tighter creative control.

Premier showcased in the Special Screenings at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, Arco went on to win the Crystal Award for Best Feature at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The film also drew international attention, earning nominations at the Golden Globes and the Foreign Press Lumières, and has now been officially selected for the 2026 Oscars.

With its gentle, contemplative tone, Arco appeals to family audiences who enjoy adventure stories infused with emotion. The film openly draws inspiration from classics like E.T., Peter Pan, and My Neighbor Totoro, following in the tradition of works that explore childhood as a world of discovery and connection, all while maintaining a strong artistic integrity.
