A direct sequel to Spider-Man: No Way Home, the film picks up four years after the events of the previous installment. Peter Parker, now an adult, lives alone in New York, having deliberately erased himself from the lives and memories of his loved ones. Entirely focused on protecting the city, he faces mounting pressure that drives a startling physical transformation, threatening his very existence — even as a wave of crime gives rise to one of the most formidable threats he has ever faced.
Sony Pictures France has released a new official video for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. It features Ned Leeds, played by Jacob Batalon, introduced as the “founder & CEO” of the Spidey Tracker, a fictional site that lets fans follow Spider-Man's movements.
This video isn’t a new trailer for the movie; it’s promotional content embedded in the Spider-Man universe. It continues the official campaign surrounding Peter Parker’s return to the big screen.
The title Brand New Day nods to a famous Marvel Comics arc, tied to Peter Parker’s reboot. Destin Daniel Cretton, who has already dabbled in the MCU with MCU and with Shang-Chi et la Légende des Dix Anneaux, revisits the idea of a hero forced to start from scratch. The screenplay is by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who previously co-wrote Homecoming, Far From Home and No Way Home.
Our spoiler-free review of Spider-Man Brand New Day:
So, how do the new adventures of Spider-Man fare? Before getting into the heart of the matter, the press (and perhaps you in the cinema seat) were treated to a video message from Tom Holland, Jacob Batalon and Jon Bernthal stressing that you MUST NOT spoil the film for others. Consider yourselves warned…
Back to the film, and without spoilers... On the storyline, unsurprising: it’s predictably plotted, many things feel telegraphed (perhaps due to habit of narrative construction over time...), but Marvel still manages to surprise a little, since some scenes we might have expected never materialize.
It’s tightly plotted, yes, but that doesn’t take away from the film’s quality in its pace, very dynamic, and in a narrative far from simplistic. It’s brisk, there are several layers, it’s interesting, even if it follows a preset brief.
The strongest point of this follow-up is its characters: Tom Holland remains as impactful as ever in the role of the Human Spider, delivering some extremely moving moments. The character of Sadie Sink is also very compelling in her approach, very different from what comic fans have seen so far (no, we won’t tell you who she plays…). A character bringing a breath of fresh air (and a little bit of dust) to the portrayal we know. We also enjoy the pairing of Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, as funny as ever.
Liza Colón-Zayas, who plays Detective Jean DeWolff, also reminded us of what the Insomniac Games video game offered — namely Spider-Man’s liaison with Yuri Watanabe in the game. A video-game vibe that appears from the start in this dynamic between the two characters, and in various scenes recalling missions you could complete in the game.
Finally, stay put until the very end, as there is a post-credits scene that hints at Spider-Man’s future in the upcoming Avengers. A scene that doesn’t add much in terms of content, but is still entertaining to watch.
All that remains is for you to go see the film and form your own opinion!
