On April 4, 2025, the world of West African contemporary music mourned the loss of Amadou Bagayoko. The Malian singer and musician, and member of the legendary duo Amadou et Mariam, passed away at the age of 70. This winter, fans will have the chance to see the duo on the big screen with the screening of a documentary directed by Ryan Marley. Titled "Amadou et Mariam: Sounds of Mali", this 1 hour and 28-minute film will be shown at the cinema during two exclusive screenings on Friday, February 6, and Sunday, February 8, 2026. Note that the Infinite theater at Le Grand Rex in Paris is hosting a special session on February 6 at 8 p.m., with Mariam Doumbia in attendance. Following the screening, there will be a Q&A session with the artist for fans to enjoy.
Amadou and Mariam: Sons of Mali explores the journey of the legendary duo as they were preparing their final album and a comeback concert in Mali, the country where they both found their roots.
It is worth noting that Amadou and Mariam are responsible for many hits, including singles like "Sabali", "Je pense à toi", and "Beaux Dimanches". However, their rise to fame—and their partnership—took shape against a backdrop of turmoil that has often shaken their homeland. Since then, their latest songs have become anthems for the marginalized, all the while maintaining a distinctly optimistic outlook in their music.
It was in the early 2000s that Amadou and Mariam started to gain wider recognition, especially among French audiences. In 2004, they released the album "Dimanche à Bamako." Produced and partly arranged by Manu Chao, the record sold over 300,000 copies in France and earned a platinum certification. Just a few months later, the duo received the Victoire de la Musique award for Best reggae, ragga, or world album of the year.
This winter, don’t miss the chance to rediscover Amadou and Mariam, the legendary duo known for their heartfelt and passionate music. Mark your calendar for February 6 and 8, 2025, to catch the screening of Amadou and Mariam: Sounds of Mali in theaters!
