Although the project has been in development for several years, Meryl Streep is officially set to join the cast of the biopic about Joni Mitchell. The renowned American actress, known for her roles in "Kramer vs. Kramer", "Out of Africa", "Death Becomes Her", "The Devil Wears Prada", and "Mamma Mia!", has been cast to bring to life the legendary Canadian singer-songwriter and musician, creator of the iconic hit "Big Yellow Taxi".
As reported by several media outlets—including NME, Rolling Stone, The Guardian, and The Independent— this news was officially confirmed by producer Clive Davis during the annual pre-Grammy Awards event in Los Angeles. While rumors had been circulating for months, the casting of Meryl Streep in the lead role had never been officially announced—until now. So, who might play a younger version of Joni Mitchell? According to Guardian sources, Anya Taylor-Joy ("Mad Max: Furiosa") has been mentioned as a possibility. However, nothing has been confirmed at this stage.
“This is Joni's life, seen through the lens of no one else. It’s her life, viewed through her own perspective. The film features the characters who have shaped her journey, some famous, others less so. And the music is incredibly cinematic,”” said director Cameron Crowe to Ultimate Classic Rock in 2024, discussing the upcoming biopic dedicated to Joni Mitchell.
It’s worth recalling that Cameron Crowe is the mastermind behind films like "Jerry Maguire", "Almost Famous", and "Vanilla Sky." A passionate music lover, Crowe also released a documentary in 2025 titled "Tom Petty: Heartbreakers Beach Party."
