Season 1 charts two parallel love stories: Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine), whose wartime letters from the trenches of the First World War morph into an unexpected time-travel journey to 18th‑century Scottish Highlands; and Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy), two lovers from rival clans who choose each other despite family duties and social conventions.

Season 2 picks up right where the finale left off. Henry and Julia stand before the Craigh Na Dun stones, hoping to return to their own era, while Ellen and Brian’s romantic escape is interrupted by the 1715 Jacobite uprising, plunging the clans into war. According to HBO Max’s press release, the two couples will be tested and torn apart by forces beyond their control, as each clan chooses its side in the rebellion.

The main cast is being kept, with Tony Curran returning as Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat; Séamus McLean Ross as Colum MacKenzie; Sam Retford as Dougal MacKenzie; Rory Alexander as Murtagh FitzGibbons Fraser; and Conor MacNeill as Ned Gowan. The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television, with Ronald D. Moore and Maril Davis as executive producers. It sits within the world of Diana Gabaldon's novels, which have sold nearly 50 million copies worldwide.
